Silverprint photo, 8 x 10, on period album page with manuscript notation “ The end of the War, Aug 1945 San Francisco, California”.  Probable Aug 14 or 15 (VJ day). Photo is not adhered, held with corner mounts. Very appealing image capturing the feel of the moment.
On back of page are several smaller images of sailors aboard The Grand Fork (Grand Forks, originally classified as patrol gunboat, PG-119, was reclassified as a patrol frigate, PF-11, on 15 April 1943. She was laid down on 29 September 1943, was launched in November 1943,  with Lieutenant Commander Christian W. Peterson, USCG, in command).

Victory  over Japan Day (also known as V-J Day, Victory in the Pacific Day,) is the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end. The term has been applied to both of the days on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made – August 15, 1945, in Japan, and because of time zone differences, August 14, 1945 (when it was announced in the United States and the rest of the Americas and Eastern Pacific Islands). The surrender document was signed on Sept 2, 1945, officially ending World War II.
