The Grecian Bend was a fashionable but exaggerated stooped posture popular in the mid-1800s, particularly in the 1860s. It involved leaning forward from the waist, often with a bustle creating a prominent rear silhouette. The name was inspired by the graceful, forward-leaning poses seen in some ancient Greek sculptures of women. The Grecian Bend was a trend that emerged in the 1820s in England and reached its peak of popularity in Victorian England and America during the 1860s. Women wearing bustles, which were padded undergarments that created a rounded or protruding rear, would often lean forward to accentuate the effect. The Grecian Bend became a subject of social commentary and ridicule, with some critics finding it an absurd display of vanity and fashion.
From bound volume with accompanying bindery marking along spine, some soiling and wear, a small amount of foxing, overall VG- fine . A very scarce title. SM 921
