nicely detailed street scene; a Cleveland Thurman banner can be seen in middleground ( Democratic presidential ticket for 1888), and the Del Monte Hotel in the backgraound.
C. W. J. Johnson (Charles Wallace Jacob), arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business. In 1881, he settled in Monterey, becoming the Hotel del Monte's first official photographer, and operated a gallery on Alvarado Street.
